What a changeover switch does on site

Sizing amp rating, poles, and positions

Amp rating must match the feeder you are switching — not just the generator nameplate sticker on the shop wall. Add continuous loads on the circuits that will run on backup: lights, fans, fridge, a few sockets, maybe one AC if your electrician sized the generator for it. Undersizing causes overheated contacts and handle stiffness; oversizing wastes panel space without adding safety.

Pole count follows your supply type:

• Single-phase home backup: 2-pole changeovers are common — both live and neutral (or both lines per local practice) switch together so you do not leave a floating neutral tied to the wrong source. • Three-phase shop or small factory: 3-pole or 4-pole units switch all phases (and neutral where required). The 1-0-2 position scheme means Source 1 – OFF – Source 2.
